Astaxanthin for Dogs

6-in-1Senior dog formulaAstaxanthin + wild Alaskan salmon oil

Most dogs get fish oil. Almost none get astaxanthin, the antioxidant that turns wild salmon pink and has been studied in senior dogs. PepPaws puts both in one pump, plus lutein for the eyes and phosphatidylserine for the brain. Pump it on their food once a day.

Why does my dog need astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is the antioxidant that turns wild salmon pink. As dogs age, their cells make energy less efficiently and deal with more everyday oxidative stress. In a 16-week study of young and senior beagles, dogs given astaxanthin showed better mitochondrial function (the part of the cell that makes energy), and the senior dogs improved the most.*

Most fish oils for dogs don't add it. PepPaws does, at 10 mg per 50 lb dog.

How much do I give?

One pump per 12.5 lb of body weight, on food, once a day.

Dog's weight Pumps a day
Under 12 lb 1 pump
13 to 25 lb 2 pumps
26 to 50 lb 4 pumps
51 lb and up 6 pumps

Start with half the dose for the first 3 to 5 days so their stomach can adjust.

Is it safe for daily use?

PepPaws is made for daily use in adult and senior dogs. Every ingredient is common in pet nutrition, and astaxanthin showed no reported side effects in the published dog studies.

Ask your vet first if your dog is pregnant, nursing, on medication (especially blood thinners or anti-inflammatories), or has surgery coming up, since fish oil can affect clotting at high doses.

Why Astaxanthin Matters

Aging doesn't hit one part of your dog. It shows up everywhere at once.

Slowing Down

Older cells make energy less efficiently. Astaxanthin supports healthy mitochondria, the parts of each cell that turn food into energy.*

Stiff Mornings

EPA and DHA omega-3s from wild Alaskan salmon support healthy joints and easier movement.*

Foggy Moments

DHA and phosphatidylserine support memory, learning and focus in senior dogs.*

Dull Eyes & Coat

Lutein and astaxanthin support healthy eyes, and omega-3s support soft skin and a shiny coat.*

Pink

Wild salmon get their color from astaxanthin. Most fish oils for dogs don't add it.

What Researchers Saw in Dogs

Published studies on astaxanthin, the hero ingredient in PepPaws.

40%
Lower oxidative stress marker
Healthy beagles given astaxanthin for 6 weeks saw their blood malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress, drop from 1.5 to 0.9 µmol/L.
37%
Lower triglycerides
The same dogs' triglycerides fell from 37.2 to 23.6 mg/dL, with no change in the control group.
16 wk
Bigger gains in senior dogs
Young and senior beagles given astaxanthin made more cellular energy (ATP) than dogs without it, and the senior dogs improved the most.

Results from small peer-reviewed studies of astaxanthin in dogs (Murai et al., 2019; Park et al., 2012). They measured blood markers, not visible changes, and tested the ingredient, not PepPaws itself. See the full studies below.

6 Benefits. One Pump.

Everything a senior dog's routine usually takes 4 bottles to cover.

Supports cellular energy as your dog gets older.*

Astaxanthin is one of nature's strongest antioxidants. In senior beagles it supported mitochondrial function, the energy engine inside every cell. More energy at the cell level is what healthy aging is built on.

  • Helps protect cells from everyday oxidative stress*
  • Supports energy and vitality in senior dogs*

Is PepPaws Right for Your Dog?

Is PepPaws Right for Your Dog?

Tap the one that sounds like your dog:

My dog is 7 or older

That's exactly who PepPaws is made for. The published astaxanthin study saw the biggest gains in senior dogs, and older dogs benefit most from steady omega-3, eye and brain support.*

My dog is a big breed

Large and giant breeds age faster than small dogs, and they carry more weight on their joints. Dosing scales by weight, so a 90 lb dog gets the right amount automatically.

My dog is slowing down

Sleeping more, skipping the stairs, waiting at the door instead of racing to it. PepPaws supports cellular energy, joints and focus in one daily pump.* If the change is sudden, check in with your vet first.

My dog already takes fish oil

Then you're halfway there. PepPaws replaces it: same wild salmon omega-3s, plus astaxanthin, lutein and phosphatidylserine that plain fish oil doesn't include.

My dog refuses pills and chews

No pills to hide and no chews to spit out. It's a salmon oil you pump right onto their food, a flavor dogs naturally go for.

My dog seems totally healthy

Great. Healthy aging is easier to support than to win back. Around age 6 or 7, before the slow-down shows, is the easiest time to build the habit.

Astaxanthin, Studied in Dogs

Plenty of dog supplements borrow research done on people or mice. These are peer-reviewed studies done in dogs, on the hero ingredient in PepPaws.

Length16 weeks

Supported cellular energy, with the biggest gains in senior dogs

Researchers fed young and senior beagles either 20 mg of astaxanthin a day or none. After 16 weeks, the astaxanthin dogs showed more ATP (cellular energy), more mitochondria and higher mitochondrial enzyme activity in their white blood cells. The improvement was larger in the senior dogs. The authors concluded astaxanthin improved mitochondrial function, most likely by reducing oxidative damage to DNA and proteins.

Confirmed dogs absorb astaxanthin

A supplement only works if it gets into the body. This study gave dogs astaxanthin by mouth and measured it in their blood, showing dogs absorb it and carry it into their plasma and white blood cells, where the later studies saw their effects.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers!

What is astaxanthin, and why does my dog need it?

Astaxanthin is a natural antioxidant made by algae. It's what turns wild salmon pink. Studies in dogs found it supported cellular energy and a healthy immune response, with the biggest gains in senior dogs.* Most fish oils for dogs don't include it.

How is this different from regular fish oil?

Regular fish oil gives omega-3s. PepPaws gives the same wild salmon omega-3s plus astaxanthin, lutein, phosphatidylserine and natural vitamin E, so one pump covers joints, brain, eyes, heart, coat and healthy aging.*

How much do I give my dog?

One pump per 12.5 lb, on food, once a day.

Dog's weight Pumps a day
Under 12 lb 1 pump
13 to 25 lb 2 pumps
26 to 50 lb 4 pumps
51 lb and up 6 pumps

Start with half the dose for the first 3 to 5 days.

How long does one bottle last?

Each 8 fl oz bottle holds about 157 pumps. That's about 5 weeks for a 26 to 50 lb dog, about 2.5 months for a 13 to 25 lb dog and about 3.5 weeks for dogs over 50 lb.

Is it safe for daily use?

Yes, it's made for daily use in adult and senior dogs, and the published astaxanthin dog studies didn't report side effects. Some dogs get a softer stool when starting any fish oil, which is why we suggest half the dose for the first few days.

My dog is on medication. Can they take PepPaws?

Ask your vet first, especially if your dog takes blood thinners or anti-inflammatories, is pregnant or nursing, or has surgery coming up. Fish oil can affect clotting at high doses.

Can puppies or cats take it?

PepPaws is formulated for adult and senior dogs. Ask your vet before giving it to a puppy under 1 year. It isn't made for cats.

Will it make my dog smell fishy?

It's real salmon oil, so the bottle smells like salmon, which is why most dogs love it. Giving it with a full meal helps avoid fishy burps.

How should I store it?

Keep it in the fridge after opening, with the pump closed. The amber bottle, natural vitamin E and rosemary extract all help keep the oil fresh.
